Obituary

FUCHS Betty Ann (née Corcoran) died on October 18 after suffering for many years from Primary Progressive Aphasia. She was 81.

Betty was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Harold and Angela Corcoran. She attended Antioch College in Ohio in 1948, where she met John G. Hooven, whom she married in 1952. They had four children, Mike, Fred, John, and Carole; they divorced in 1969. Betty married Lawrence H. Fuchs in 1970, who had three children from a previous marriage, Janet, Frances and Naomi. Larry and Betty lived in Weston, Massachusetts, for over forty years.

Betty was deeply committed to higher education, and worked to advance gender and racial equality. She directed fundraising at Wheelock College, Gallaudet University for the hearing impaired, Wellesley College, and finally Boston University. She served on the board of directors of Wheelock College, from which she was awarded an honorary doctorate, and Antioch College. Betty was also active in her community—she was particularly proud of spearheading fundraising for the Weston Community Center.

Betty was an avid traveler, a talented cook, and had a life-long passion for birds. She treasured her many family vacations on Sanibel Island and Wellfleet on Cape Cod. She is survived by her husband, seven children, nine grandchildren, and two sisters, Mary Corcoran and Carole Huxley.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 3rd at 3:00 at Orchard Cove in Canton Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Massachusetts Audubon Society or Antioch College.
