Obituary

Joseph Edward Lonergan of Mansfield, formerly of Stoughton and a United States Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict passed away on Tuesday October 16,2012 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He was 81 years old and the loving husband of the late Pearl F. (Arachesky) Lonergan to whom he was married to for over 41 years. Mr. Lonergan is survived by his children, Jean Johnson and her husband Mark of Mansfield, Steven Lonergan and his wife Marla of Sharon, his three sisters, Frannie Ritchie of Florida, Millie Doucette and her husband Robert of Florida, Barbara Jackson and her husband Wayne of New Hampshire and his brother Roland “Rollie” Lonergan of Stoughton. Other survivors include his 5 grandchildren, Tara O’Keefe and her husband Ryan of Mansfield, Jessica Johnson and Marissa Johnson also of Mansfield, Abby Lonergan, Sarabeth Lonergan both of Sharon and his 3 great-grandchildren, Cayden Campbell, Joey O’Keefe and Maggie Rae O’Keefe.He was also a brother to the late James Lonergan, Pauline Salvason, Pat Hammond, Margaret Nelson, Leo Lonergan and Helen Galant.

Born June 21, 1931 in Stoughton, Massachusetts he was a son to the late James W. and Mary ( Kernen ) Lonergan. He attended Stoughton Public Schools and was a graduate of Stoughton High School. He also served his country honorably as a Tech. Sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was the proud recipient of both the Army Of Occupation Medal while stationed in Germany and the Good Conduct Medal.

Mr. Lonergan was employed by Schofield’s Concrete Forms in Burlington,MA as a Concrete Foreman for over 40 years. He also was known to assist his son-in-law with various HVAC projects over the years. He was an avid Boston Bruins hockey fan and enjoyed doing yard work. He took great pride in his homes appearance. Joe had a very quiet personality and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also cherished the quality time he spent with his brother Rollie. He also loved a good cigar. Joe was also a collector of old coins and bottles.

Visiting hours will be held on Saturday October 20, 2012 from 4 - 6 PM from the Sheehan Funeral Home, 115 Monk Street, Stoughton. His Funeral service with military honors will be held at 5:30 P.M. All are welcome to attend. Cremation will follow and his interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown,MA 02472 in Joseph’s memory, would be appreciated.
