Obituary


SELMA L. (CALL) HUGHES, of Hingham, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 6th, 2012. She was born in Newton Upper Falls in 1921, the daughter of Halmar and Selma Call. She was the wife of the late Robert L. Hughes and mother of Susan (Hughes) Griffin. She was a graduate of Newton High School and attended Framingham State College. She then worked for Robert Gair box Co. until she married in 1945. Mrs. Hughes was very proud of her Swedish heritage.

She and her family lived in Beverly, Newton Highlands, Natick and Centerville on Cape Cod. While she lived in Natick she worked for the director of nurses at Leonard Morse Hospital and then became the office manager for an otolaryngology office at the hospital. She and her husband enjoyed playing bridge with friends, her daughter Susan and grandson Tom. She also loved playing hearts with her son-in-law Joe and grandchildren Tim and Emily. she volunteered several years as an ombudsman at several nursing homes in the Framingham area.

While living in Centerville, she delivered meals-on-wheels for almost 15 years. Mrs. Hughes was very involved in the senior center, joining the book club, bridge club and many other activities. During her time in Centerville, she also wintered in Melbourne Beach, FL. In addition, she was amember of South Congregational Church in Centerville and spent every Monday afternoon volunteering at the Thrifty Niche thrift store at the church.

She leaves her daughter Susan and her husband Joseph Griffin, three grandchildren; Timothy and his wife Amy Scofield, Emily and Thomas; and a great grandchild, Teddy. She is also survived by a son Richard.

After her husband died, she moved to Linden Ponds in Hingham to be closer to her daughter and family. When she was no longer able to live independently, she moved to the 3rd floor of Renaissance Gardens at Linden Ponds.

Friends may visit at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham on Tuesday from 4-7 PM. The interment is to be private.
