Jose S. Gutierrez, Ph.D., of Taunton, died Wednesday, September 26 in Morton Hospital following a period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of Elsa (Lapuz) Gutierrez. He was born 87 years ago in the Phillippines, the son of the late Cirilo and Maria (Sebastian) Gutierrez. He was educated in the Phillippines, where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Statistics from the University of the Phillippines. After relocating to the United States, he received his Master's Degree from North Carolina State University, and his Ph.D. from Iowa State University. He had been a Taunton resident for the past 25 years. Prior to his retirement, he served as Agricultural Statistician for the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, traveling worldwide, particularly in South America and Asia. He previously served as Director of the Statistical Center at the University of the Phillippines in Manila. Dr. Gutierrez was formerly employed as a Professor of Economics and Statistics at the Graduate Level at the University of the Phillippines. He was a communicant of the Holy Family Church in East Taunton.
In addition to his wife, he leaves: 1 son: Joel L. Gutierrez of Taunton; 2 daughters: Purissima "Irma" Gutierrez and Catherine Gutierrez and her husband, Brian Hall, both of Taunton; 1 granddaughter: Danielle Harrison and her husband, Grant of Taunton; 2 great grandchildren: McLean and Harper Harrison, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held from The Riendeau-Mulvey Funeral Home, 467 Bay Street, on Monday, October 1 at 9:00 A.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in the Holy Family Church, East Taunton, at 10:00 A.M. Interment will be in Mayflower Hill Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting Hours will be held on Sunday, from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M.
