Obituary

Henry “Hank” Ohlmann, EMCS (SS) Retired, 88, died on September 24, 2012 at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was born in Baisely Park, Queens on October 8, 1923 to Harry and Theresa (Heiselmann) Ohlmann. On September 23, 1948 he married Sophie Peitler. She died on September 17, 1978.

He is survived by his son Christopher and his wife Karen of Walllingford; his daughter Stacey and her husband David Leitch of Brooklyn and grandchildren Liam, Sarah, Shawn, and Kimberly. He also leaves behind his dear companion and fiancee’ Ethel Geberth of Pawcatuck. He will be sadly missed by his buddy, Murphy.

In early 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During World War II, he served on the U.S.S. Ericsson in the Atlantic and then transferred to sub service in the Pacific aboard the USS Redfish. He served aboard the USS Tusk, USS Sennet, taught at the Sub School in Groton, he was the Chief of the Boat aboard the USS Patrick Henry and retired from active duty off of the USS Nautilus in 1964. He immediately began his second career at Electric Boat where he retired as a Procurement Quality Control Analyst in 1988.

He was very proud of his children’s accomplishments. He loved to travel the world. He was able to see almost every corner of it through his career in the Navy and later in life on extended cruises with Ethel. Some of his favorite places include Holy Loch, Scotland, China, and Easter Island. He was currently planning a trip to the Amazon and Antarctica. He enjoyed model railroading.

Hank’s family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Thursday from 6-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, Groton Long Pt. Road, Groton on Friday at 11am. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery, Old Mystic.
