Obituary

William J. "Bill" Furey, 82, of New Bedford passed away Sunday September 23, 2012.

Born in Nantucket, the son of the late Ambrose J. and Ellen (Power) Furey, he moved to the New Bedford area in 1939.

He was a communicant of St. Julie Billiart Church in Dartmouth.

Mr. Furey was formerly employed as a commercial fisherman sailing out of the Ports of New Bedford and Nantucket for 40 years.

Bill joined the Marine Corps in 1951 and served as a machine gunner with the First Marine Division in Korea. A disabled veteran, he was a member and Past Commander of the Andrews-Dahill Post 1531 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Bill loved his family and friends and showed it daily. He will be deeply missed by all.

Survivors include a son, John Furey; a sister, Ann Driscoll; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was the former husband of the late Marion E. (Damon) Furey, father of the late William J. Furey, Jr., and brother of the late Lenora Holtkamp, Margaret Smith, and Ambrose John Furey.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 AM in St. Julie Billiart Church. Burial will follow in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
