John F. Keavy, Jr., 73, of Westport died Sunday, September 23, 2012 at Catholic Memorial Home in Fall River. He was the husband of M. Antoinette “Toni” (Crudele) Keavy.
Born in Fall River and son of the late John F. Keavy, Sr. and Alexina (Piche) Keavy, he had resided Westport since 1969. Mr. Keavy was a 1957 graduate of Somerset High School and got his B.A. from Bradford-Durfee College, now known as University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He then went on to get his Masters from Bridgewater State College in 1965. Prior to his retirement in 2003, Mr. Keavy was a teacher in the Fall River school system for 38 years and was honored with the Teacher of the Year Award. A communicant of Our Lady of Grace Church in Westport, he volunteered his time to the Cub Scouts as Chairman of Pack 100 and was very active in St. Vincent de Paul Camp in Westport. Mr. Keavy drove buses for the Cub Scouts, catechism students and the campers, while also serving as counselor and maintenance man whenever needed.
Mr. Keavy was a member of the Pioneer Club of UMass, St. Vincent de Paul Society where he had served as a lector, the American Truck Historical Society and the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunk, ME which he especially enjoyed. He was a trolley car enthusiast, transportation historian, avid photographer and model railroader.
Survivors besides his loving wife include: 2 sons: Christopher J. Keavy of Cranston, RI and Stephen J. Keavy of Westport; several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews as well.
Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 9:00 A.M. from the Potter Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Grace Church at 10:00 A.M..
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 5-8 P.M.
Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
