GLOUCESTER: Frances Chapline Everett, known to her family and friends as Cherie, a 35-year survivor of breast cancer, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2012, at age 79 in her home in Gloucester, MA
Born in Washington, DC on March 28, 1933, she was the daughter of Rear Admiral Vance D. Chapline, USN (Ret.), and Dorothy E. Drake. Cherie grew up in Washington and attended National Cathedral School, Rosemary Hall School and Skidmore College.
After working in New York City for several years, including time at the New Yorker magazine, Cherie met her future husband on a ski holiday in Vermont. They were married and the couple opened the Old Ark Inn and Ski Lodge with a business partner in 1956. Cherie raised her four boys in Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, volunteered at her sons’ schools, and in her community, and was an enthusiastic fan at her sons’ hockey games. She helped to stage school plays and musicals, and organize church rummage sales and holiday bazaars. Cherie loved books and reading, and was a corporator and volunteer at the Sawyer Free Public Library in Gloucester. In earlier years she worked in the Admissions Office and Library at Groton School. She loved to draw, paint and do art projects with her children and grandchildren. She had a lifelong love for music, singing in the church choir at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Gloucester, and traveled internationally, singing with her husband in the Yale Alumni Chorus. Cherie also was always ready to dance at parties with family and friends. She loved animals, and had dog biscuits ever-ready in her pocket when she walked the neighborhood.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Richard Everett III of Gloucester, her sisters Dorothy C. Fitzgerald of Virginia Beach, VA and Frances M. H. Pearson of Chevy Chase, MD, and was predeceased by her sister Cynthia M. Lack. She also is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law: Richard Everett IV and Carmen P. Everett of Silver Spring, MD, Edwin D. and Deborah T. Everett of Newton, MA, Thomas D. and Katherine W. Everett of Pittsburgh, PA, and Peter P. and Elissa S. Everett of San Carlos, CA, and seven grandchildren: Dylan, Stephanie, Teddy, Charlotte, Annabel, Graham and Alice.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 29, 2012, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 48 Middle Street, Gloucester, MA.
