Obituary

WEBSTER – Edward J. Malley, 81, of Webster died Thursday, September 20, 2012 in UMass/Memorial Healthcare, Worcester with his family at his side.
He leaves his wife of 60 years, Claire M. (Isabelle) Malley; 2 sons, John E. “Jack” Malley and his wife Deborah of Walpole and Steven M. Malley of Warwick, RI; 2 grandchildren, Kenneth and Elizabeth Malley; a brother, Raymond F. Malley, Jr. and his wife Mary of Whitinsville; 2 godchildren, Ellen Hatfield and Debra Montague; nephews and nieces; and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his sister Doris Demarest in 1999.
He was born in Grafton and raised in Uxbridge, the youngest child of Raymond F. Malley, Sr. and Ellen (Creighton) Malley. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Milford in 1949 and did further studies at Worcester Junior College. He moved to Webster in 1960.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Army Security Agency in Austria and Germany.
Mr. Malley worked for New England Telephone, now Verizon, for 32 years, retiring as a first level supervisor in special services in the Worcester office in 1990.
He was a cofounder of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, which opened in 1996, and was involved with its daily operation until last year. A member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and a life member of its League of the Sacred Heart, he served as a Eucharistic minister and as the chairman of the Bishop’s Fund, now Partners in Charity, for 10 years. He was the first president of Saint Anne’s School Association, a past president of the Marianhill Central Catholic High School PTA in Southbridge, a member of the Sacred Heart Pitch League and also of the Webster-Dudley Knights of Columbus Council 228. He initiated a successful campaign that provided free busing for students at Catholic schools in the tri-town area in the early 1970’s.
The funeral will be held Monday, September 24, from the Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School Street, with a Mass at 10:30 AM in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 16 East Main Street. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM Monday in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Uxbridge. Calling hours will be from 5:00 to 8:00 PM Sunday, September 23, in the funeral home. Donations in his name may be made to either the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, 17 East Main Street, or to St. Anne’s Elementary School, 12 Day St., PO Box 818, both in Webster, MA 01570.
