Obituary

MEDFORD – Maurice W. Carroll Jr., 83, the owner of Carroll’s Restaurant on Main Street in Medford, died Monday, Jan. 21, at his Medford home, peacefully, while surrounded by his family after a brief illness. He was the loving husband of 50 years of Dolores D. (DelTorto) Carroll, with whom he celebrated their golden wedding anniversary this past November 12th.

He was born in Boston, July 22, 1918, a son of the late Maurice W. and Gertrude (Kenefick) Carroll Sr. He was a lifelong resident of Medford, and graduated Medford High School with the class of 1937. He remained active with the Medford High Mustangs throughout his life and was honored with Charter Induction into the Mustang Hall of Fame with both a Community Award and an Athletic Award. He attended Worcester Academy and later Brown University.His education was interrupted when he enlisted into the Army during WWII. He served in the European Theater and was witness to the liberation of the Dachau Prison Camp.

He returned from the war to begin his distinguished career as one of the area’s premier restauranteers with the opening of Carroll’s Diner. Success and expansion led to the establishment of Carroll’s Restaurant. Throughout his life, Mr. Carroll donated time, energy and money to numerous charities and served on the Board of Directors for the Medford Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Directors of the Medford Savings Bank, and was an incorporator and member of the Board of Directors of the Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He also was a former member of the Medford Elks, the Medford Lions and the Medford American Legion. His favorite affiliation was with the Medford High School Mustangs.

Mr. Carroll was a lifelong communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Medford.Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law; Maurice W. Carroll III and his wife Carla (Forcina) Carroll of Medford, Thomas A. Carroll of Medford, Paul S. and his wife Deborah (Sheehan) Carroll of Arlington, a daughter and son-in-law; Diane G. and her husband Frank DeBenedictis of Medford, eight grandchildren; Lesley, Jill, Courtney, David, Michael, and Maurice W. Carroll IV, Christina and Deanna DeBenedictis, a brother and sister-in-law; John and his wife Claire (Blinn) Carroll of Andover, and several nieces, nephews, dear friends and former employees.He was also father of the late David M. Carroll who died in 1975 and brother of the late Gertrude Hupfer.His funeral is Friday, Jan. 25, at 9:00 a.m. from the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Ave. Medford, phone (781) 385 0128. Funeral Mass Friday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, 118 High St. (Rte 60) Medford. Visiting hours Wednesday 5 to 8 and Thursday 4 to 8 in the funeral home.
