Annie R. (Peters) Abraham entered into eternal life on September 10, 2012 at Alden Court Nursing Home after a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late George J. Abraham.
Born June 15, 1922 in New Bedford to the late George and Kaffa (Dumas) Peters, she lived much of her life there with temporary residences at her summer home in Buzzards Bay in the late 70’s and early 80’s and in Kingston, Washington from 1984. She returned to New Bedford in 2004. While in Washington State, her flower gardens were the envy of friends and passersby alike. A 1941 graduate of New Bedford High School, Ann married on February 10, 1945 and raised two daughters while working full-time for many years including over ten years as a tool and die inspector at Atlas Tack Corporation in Fairhaven. An avid, excellent cook and meticulous housekeeper, Ann and George’s home was always open to anyone needing comfort, company and a great meal. Even after her husband’s death in 1979, Annie continued in her treasured calling of supplier of food and assistance to many family members and friends. Her ability to whip up a meal fit for royalty on the shortest notice was a well known and admired skill. Her desserts were always willingly devoured by all. In recent years at Whaler’s Cove Assisted Living Facility in New Bedford, she became known as the distributor of Hershey Kisses at every opportunity. The staff and friends knew that a visit to her apartment would invariably result in a homemade treat and/or a handful of Kisses. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her daughter Beatrice and husband Richard Long of Hull, MA; son-in-law Reuben Gartin and his wife Delmarie of Kingston, WA, her sisters Celia Attalah of Fairhaven, Octavia David, Louise Dupre and her husband Joseph, Maryann Chomak and her husband Walter, and Norma Thomas and her husband Joseph, all of New Bedford, as well as many nieces, nephews and godchildren. She was mother of the late Melanie A. Gartin, and the sister of the late Rose Peters (Sister Mary Assunta, R.S.M.), Freda Thomas, Emily Alves, Mary Barckett, and Theresa Coury.
A parishioner of Our Lady of Purgatory Maronite Catholic Church in New Bedford for over 60 years and a longtime member of Our Lady’s Sodality there, Annie will have a Funeral Mass offered for her soul at the Church on Monday, September 17, 2012 at 10 AM.. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visiting hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Nurse and Hospice Care, Box 751, Fairhaven MA 02719-0751.
