Obituary

CHICOPEE – Leonard N. Longpre, 75, of the Arbors at 929 Memorial Drive in Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Saturday, September 1, 2012. He passed into Eternal Life from his home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. He was born in Springfield on January 2, 1937, a beloved son of the late Wilfred A. and Matilda (Cote) Longpre. He was raised on Congress Street in the North End section of Springfield, graduated in 1955 from Cathedral High School and lived in the city for many years. In 1965, he moved to High Street in Chicopee and lived in the city for the remainder of his life. He served his country in the United States Army from 1960 until 1962 and attained the rank of Private First Class. Known for his love of music, Leonard played the organ and was choir director for many non-denominational services while serving his country in the United States Army. When he returned to the area, he also played the organ at the former Saint George Church in Chicopee Falls. For 15 years, he was employed as a lathe operator at Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks, Connecticut and later worked for 22 years as a truck driver at Central Metal Products in East Windsor, Connecticut. He was last employed as a truck driver at Windsor Manufacturing Company in Windsor, Connecticut and retired in 1997. Active in his faith, he was a longtime communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by: his loving sister and brother-in-law, Bella I. Constant and her husband, Leo W. Constant; his brother-in-law, Peter R. Langevin; his two cherished nieces and their husbands, Susan M. Carabetta Brassard and her husband, Richard Brassard and Lucille M. Groleau and her husband, Ronald Groleau. He leaves: his loving sister, Irene G. Langevin of East Longmeadow; his devoted nieces, Eunice I. Pellegrini and her husband, Richard, of East Longmeadow and Jeannine I. Santoro and her husband, Richard, of Suffield, CT; his two devoted nephews, Ronald W. Constant and his wife, Peggy, of Chicopee and Robert W. Constant and his wife, Judy, of Westfield; his many cherished grandnephews, grandnieces, great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces. His funeral will be held on Friday morning, September 7, 2012 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial with Military Honors will follow the Mass at Notre Dame Cemetery, 63 Lyman Street, South Hadley, MA 01075. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, September 6, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Sainte Rose de Lima Church Organ Fund, 15 Chapel Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
