Obituary

ADELAIDE M. (BROWN) PRATT, of Cohasset and Chestnut Hill, passed away at her home in Cohasset on Saturday, May 22nd. She was 93. Mrs. Pratt was born in Cohasset and was a graduate of the Windsor School in Boston. A noted yachtswoman, Mrs. Pratt extensively cruised the waters from Eastport, Maine to the Florida Keys with her husband on board their yachts Wester Till and Fomalhaut. Through these trips she captured local scenery on camera and then gave lectures to garden clubs, historical societies and yachting groups. Her involvement with photography covered both the yachting world as well as trying to preserve in color the wildflowers of this region. Mrs. Pratt received many photographic awards for her efforts. She was winner of Camera Club competitions for color and nature, Photographic Society of America honors and 2 Galaxy Awards. She was also honored for her work for the Wildflower Society's Garden in the Woods preservation project. Her award winning photographs of flowers, including many endangered species, and gardens were donated to the Wildflower Society for their archives as well as to the Smithsonian Institution archives, where she was recently honored. Mrs. Pratt has had numerous honors bestowed upon her including life member of the Chestnut Hill Garden Club, the Cohasset Garden Club, of which she was a past president, and the Cohasset Yacht Club. She is a member of the Colonial Dames of America, The Country Club in Brookline and the Vincent Club. She was a former member of the Photographic Society of America, The Boston Camera Club, the New England Camera Club Council, the Junior League of Boston, of which she was a past treasurer, as well as a member of the Cohasset Historical Society, and the Cruising Club of America. Also, Mrs. Pratt was on the Visiting Committee of the Arnold Arboretum and was an honorary board member of the New England Wildflower Society. She was the wife of the late Lewis S. Bell and the late Richard W. Pratt. Mrs. Pratt leaves her daughter, Virginia B. Gray of Hingham, and 3 granddaughters; Martha Music, Margaret G. Curtis and Ellen G. Dresser. Also survived by 6 great grandchildren. The date and time of a Memorial Service will be announced by the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, Hingham. For those who wish, donations may be made in her memory to the First Parish Church in Cohasset, 23 North Main St., Cohasset, MA 02025 or to the Cohasset Sailing Club, P.O. Box 111, Cohasset, MA 02025. The interment in the Hingham Cemetery was private.
