Obituary

Ariadne P. (Sarando) Kostarides, 87, of Worcester, formerly of Newport, RI, passed away Friday, August 31st in UMass-Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Her husband of 26 years, Theodore A. Kostarides passed away in 1970. She leaves her daughter, Chrysanthe E. K. Manuel and her husband Mark of Worcester; her son Anestis T. Kostarides and wife Patricia of Wakefield, R.I.; two sisters, Elpida Milias and her husband, Emmanuel of Shrewsbury and Minerva Davies and her husband, G. Bradford of Poughkeepsie, NY; five grandchildren including, Kyle Manuel and his fiancée, Allison Lawrence of Worcester; Nikki, Jessica, Michael, and Stacey Kostarides, a great-grandson Owen; and many nephews and nieces. Two brothers, Pericles and Stephen Sarando and her sister, Loukia Bitzas predeceased her.

She was born in Worcester, the daughter of Peter and Evangelin (Papson) Sarando. She was the eldest of Worcester’s musical family, “The Sarando Family”. Mrs. Kostarides had worked in Newport, RI as the bookmobile and special services librarian (providing services to homebound) for over 25 years, as well as providing night and emergency services through the American Red Cross for Newport’s military families. Ariadne had previously worked as a teaching assistant for the Newport Public School system, and as manager for the family business, “Sarando’s”.

Mrs. Kostarides was a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral and a former member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in Newport. She was a founding member and treasurer of Save the Waterfront in Newport, past-president of the International Sunshine Society, serving the homebound and shut-ins, past-president of the Woman’s Auxiliary of the Newport YMCA, a Girl Scout Troop Leader, and a storyteller for the State of Rhode Island as well as the Newport Bookmobile.

Her funeral is Thursday, September 6th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a funeral service at 11:30 a.m. in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday, September 5th from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ariadne’s memory may be made to Abby’s House, 52 High Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
