TEWKSBURY – Joan A. (Murphy) Hagerty, age 77, a Tewksbury resident for the past five decades, most recently Carnation Drive, died Monday morning, August 27, at the Wingate at Belvidere in Lowell, after a long courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Cambridge, September 3, 1934, the daughter of the late John H. and Martha (McTiernan) Murphy. She was raised in Somerville, but moved to Tewksbury in 1964, where she was a communicant of St. William’s Church.
She graduated from Northern Essex Community College, and worked as a councilor until her retirement.
In recent years, she was a frequent visitor to the Tewksbury, Lowell and Chelmsford Senior Centers, where she had acquired many friends with her love of card games. She was a long time friend of Lois W.
She is survived by three children, Dianne Eldridge and her husband Larry of Freedom, NH, John Hagerty of Webster, MA, and Debra Tierney and her husband John of Tewksbury; two grandchildren, Shay Tierney of Tewksbury and Brendan Sullivan of Hampton, NH; a brother, Leonard Murphy of FL; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also sister of the late Robert Murphy, Gene Murphy and John Murphy.
Visiting hours are Wednesday, August 29, from 3 to 6 p.m. in the funeral home. Her funeral will begin Thursday morning at 9:00 from the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass Thursday, August 30, at 10:00 a.m. in St. William’s Church, 1351 Main St. (Rte. 38) Tewksbury. Burial will follow at Tewksbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701, will be appreciated.
