Obituary

John M. “Johnny Mike” Reis age 50 of Provincetown died Friday August 24, 2012 at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington following a long illness. He was the husband of Joy Futch Reis. Born in Hyannis, he was the son of the late Frank L. and Marilyn B. (Motta) Reis. Johnny Mike is a well known Provincetown native. For 23 years he was the owner of Golden Hammer Construction, of Provincetown. Although he lived with a chronic life threatening illness for over 20 years, John was able to contribute a great deal to his community. For 30 years he served as a member of the Provincetown Fire Department, the last two a District 5 Chief. He also served on the Provincetown board of assessors for two years and assistant harbor master in Provincetown for 4 years. He also found time to be a coach and to serve as board Chair of the Lower Cape Youth Hockey program. He will be remembered as a jovial, optimistic man who enjoyed his work and free time spent with family especially his two sons. It can be said that he managed his life and his illness on his own terms.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his twin sons, who are also members of the Provincetown fire department, Laytin T Reis and Jada L. Reis., his brother Russell V. Zawaduk, of Truro also a member of the Provincetown fire department, his other brother Lee Zawaduk of Eastham, several nieces and nephews who fondly called him “Uncle Bay,” his beloved uncle Lewis Reis and his family of Orleans, his aunt Carmen of Little Rock, Arkansas and her husband John Michael North, the person for whom Johnny Mike was named. He is also survived by his very close friend David Donahue and his family of Orleans.

A Funeral service will take place on Wednesday August 29, 2012 at 10:00am in St Peter the Apostle Church 11 Prince St. Provincetown. Visiting hours are Tuesday from 4:00-7:00pm at the Gately-McHoul Funeral Home 94 Harry Kemp Way Provincetown. If desired memorial contributions in memory of Johnny Mike may be made to the Provincetown Rescue Squad or to the Provincetown Firefighters Association both located at 25 Shank Painter Rd. Provincetown, MA 02657.
