Obituary

CHICOPEE – Grover S. “Don” Hundley, 86, of the Aldenville section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, August 14, 2012. He passed into Eternal Life at his home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers from Mercy Hospice. He was born in Kenton, Gibson County, Tennessee on November 7, 1925, a beloved son of the late Thurman and Myrtle (Cherry) Hundley. He was raised and schooled in Kenton, Tennessee and lived there until enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps in 1945, where he served his country during World War II. He attained the rank of Technical Sergeant and received the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany). In 1947, his military service brought him to Westover Field in Chicopee where he settled in the Aldenville section of the city and lived there for the remainder of his life. Following his discharge from the service, he was employed as production manager at the former Holyoke Magazine Press. He later became the plant manager at Reynolds Manufacturing in Holyoke and retired in 1987. Active in his faith, Don was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee, where he served his parish for many years as a greeter and usher. He also volunteered for many years at the church bingo, was a worker for the Catholic Stewardship Appeal for the Parish and was a Confraternity of Christian Doctrine Instructor. He was a member of the Aldenville American Legion Post 337 and a member of the Disabled American Veterans Westover Chapter 11. Don was also a founding member of the Aldenville Junior Athletic Club (AJAC) and a founding member of the Hill Investment Club. He leaves his devoted wife and best friend, Lorraine C. (Hebert) Hundley. They were married on November 27, 1947 at Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee and were blessed with over 64 years of happiness together. He also leaves: his loving sons, Richard C. “Rick” Hundley and his wife, Nancy, of East Longmeadow and Kevin C. Hundley and his wife, Virginia, of Cheshire, CT; his five cherished grandchildren whom he adored, Sean Hundley, Erin Hundley and her fiancé, Rich Krug and Tyler, Sam and Wesley Hundley; and his dear sister, Eunice Fields, of Gleason, TN. He also leaves his loving sister-in-law of the Hebert family, Shirley Hebert, of Chicopee; and her family who were his loving nieces and nephews, Sister Carol Hebert, SSJ, David and Denise Hebert, Kathy Hebert and Denise Descoteau, and Daniel Hebert. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his dear brother, Chester Hundley and his dear brothers-in-law of the Hebert family, Leo and Rene Hebert. His funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, August 21, 2012, beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial with Military Honors will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, August 20, 2012, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to Mercy Hospice, 1236 Main Street, Suite 202, Holyoke, MA 01040.
