Obituary

John Sinclaire Howland of Danville, NH died at home on 13 August, 2012 after a long battle with prostate cancer.
John (Jack) was born on January 5, 1939 in Norwood, Massachusetts, the eldest son of Herbert Vaughan Howland, and Miriam (Sinclaire) Howland.
A 1956 graduate of East Providence High School in Rhode Island, John went on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he earned his SB in Mechanical Engineering in 1960, SM (1962), and Mech E (1966). He was a practicing engineer for nearly fifty years with the firms of Foster-Miller Associates, Arthur D. Little, and as founder and president of the consulting firm Howland Associates. He holds several design patents.
John held his amateur radio operator’s license since 1951 (W1AUA) joining the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES). That same year he became an Eagle Scout and, in 1953, attended the Irvine Ranch Jamboree where he was correspondent to the Providence Journal. He was a private pilot and a sailor. Among many interests, he enjoyed restoring period houses, antique vehicles and clocks, read extensively, and had a broad appreciation of music. He and his wife traveled widely.
He was an active member of his community serving for many years and chairing the Danville Planning Board and Zoning Board of Adjustment, and The Town of Danville 250th Anniversary Celebration committee. He is a past president and life member of The Old Meeting House Association of Danville, NH.
John is survived by his wife Ann R. Howland of Danville, NH; his brother Robert V. Howland of San Antonio, TX; four children by a prior marriage, Elizabeth A. Howland of Frisco, TX, Deborah J. Howland of Concord, NH, Susan M. Howland of Concord, NH, Jonathan E. Howland of Clayton, NC; eight grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
