Obituary

Miss Sophie M. Rudzis, 95, of Medford, died August 9 after a lengthy stay at the Blaire House in Tewksbury. She leaves behind a sister, Josephine Wazlowski (formerly of Tewksbury), a niece and nephew and their spouses, two grandnieces, and other relatives. She was predeceased by her sister Agnes and brother, Henry Rudzis. Sophie was born in Boston’s West End, daughter of the late Mary (Buianowska) and George Rudzis, both natives of Poland, She was the eldest of four children, and the one most interested in shopping, fashion, and style. Even when traveling by bus to her family's home on weekends from her work-week home in Framingham, she would take care in her appearance, dressing as if going on a special outing. Her collections of nail polishes, perfumes, jewelry, clothes, and shoes were a delight to any of the little girls who had the pleasure of visiting her. Sophie was educated at St Joseph's Parochial School and at Girls' High School in Boston. She also attended classes at Our Lady of Ostrobrama ("St. Mary's"), where she learned to write in her parents' native language. She used this knowledge for many years to keep up a correspondence with relatives still living in Poland. After graduation, Sophie worked until her retirement with relatives at their shop in Framingham, doing meticulous, highly skilled work on made-to-order fur coats. Among the pleasures in Sophie's life were reading, walking her relatives' dogs, cooking, and baking. She would often make "doggie cookies" in her free time, and she also belonged to several book clubs. She enjoyed making annual trips with her mother and brother to the west coast, where they played the slot machines in Reno, Nevada, and visited with relatives in California. In her later years, and before her illness, she enjoyed taking cruises with her brother. Sophie believed in giving others the best of things. It wasn't uncommon for her to give relatives extra-generous gifts at birthdays and Christmas or to give large monetary gifts to the churches she attended. She set a fine example of generosity for those fortunate enough to be in her life. At the request of the family, visiting hours have been omitted. A Funeral Mass in Sophie's memory will be celebrated on Saturday, August 18 at 11:30 am. In St William's Church, 1351 Main Street Tewksbury. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. Contributions in Sophie’s name may be sent to the Little Sisters of the Poor, Jeanne Jugan Residence, 186 Highland Ave, Somerville, MA 02143. Arrangements by the Dello Russo Family Funeral Home, 306 Main Street, Medford.
