Frederick D. “Fred” Oxford, 82, a longtime town resident, died peacefully on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at the Milford Care & Rehabilitation Center, following an extended period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of Alberta M. (Cataldo) Oxford for more than 54 years until her death in July 2009.
Born in Woburn, June 21, 1930 a son of the late Arthur and Elsie (Dawe) Oxford, he was raised and educated in Woburn, and moved to Franklin in 1952.
Mr. Oxford was a self employed building contractor, and also worked as a supervisor for the Massachusetts Dept. of Corrections at the work release industries program.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He attained the rank of seaman 2nd class, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, The United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in July 1954.
He was an active communicant of St. Mary’s Church, and a member of the Sacred Heart Council Knights of Columbus. He loved time spent with family especially his grandchildren, playing cards, bingo, travel and antique autos.
He is survived by 3 sons: Paul F. Oxford and his wife Elena of Medfield, William B. Oxford and his wife Lynn of Blackstone, David A. Oxford and his wife Lisa of Franklin, a daughter Linda A. Staffiere and her husband Steven of Canton, a brother Louis Oxford of Natick, a sister Winifred Whittemore of Bradford, MA, 5 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is also the brother of the late Cyril Oxford.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Thursday at 10:15 AM from the Charles F. Oteri & Son, Franklin Funeral Home, 33 Cottage Street, with a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, 1 Church Sq., Franklin at 11 AM. Interment with military hours will follow at the family lot in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Calling hours are Wednesday from 4 – 8 PM.
