GLOUCESTER: Carl W. Alsen, III, 80, formerly of Sudbury and Arlington, passed away on Tuesday August 7, 2012 at the Addison Gilbert Hospital. He was the husband of Barbara D. (Smith) Alsen.
Born in Boston on June 29, 1932 he was the son of the late Walter and Helen (Danskin) Alsen. Carl served in the U.S. Army as 1st Lieutenant following his completion of an Electrical Engineering degree from MIT. He worked for Genrad Corporation before starting his own custom photo lab, Grindstone Studio in Sudbury. While in Sudbury he was a member of the Sudbury Minuteman Company. Upon his retirement Carl’s passion was his volunteer work for the Gloucester community. He was an avid ambassador for Gloucester Harbor, delivered Meals on Wheels and was a driver for American Red Cross, Gloucester Council on Aging and Senior Care.
In addition to his wife of fifty-six years, he is survived by his loving children, David Alsen and his wife, Sheila of Boxborough, Leanne Waldie and her husband, John of Fryeburg, ME, Susan Keenan and her husband, Mark of Conway, NH, Sharon Meader and her husband, John of Shrewsbury and Wendy Cookson and her husband, Robert of Craftsbury, VT; eleven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his sister, Janet (Alsen) Meymaris.
A memorial service will be held on Monday August 13th in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be prior to the service from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
