Eugene J. "Gene" O'Neill, a lifelong Charlestown resident, passed into eternal life on Friday, July 27, 2012 at The Soldier's Home in Chelsea following an extended illness. He was 76 years old.
Gene was born in Boston on March 23, 1936, a son of the late Eugene A. O'Neill and Eleanor M. (Burns) O'Neill. He grew up in Charlestown and was educated at St. Catherine's Parochial School, graduated from English High School in Boston and recieved his Engineering Degree from Northeastern University. He enlisted into the United States Air Force on May 6, 1955 and served his country proudly and honorably during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on February 4, 1959 with the rank of Airman First Class. Gene worked for Polaroid Corporation for several years as an accountant in the Accounting & Testing Division. He was a member of The Halligan Club, Bunker Hill Council # 62, Knights of Columbus, Malden Irish American Club and The Somerville City Club.
Gene is the beloved husband of the late Margaret A. (McCormick) O'Neill. He is the devoted brother of Eleanor Collins, Mary O'Neill, Patricia Meeker, Rita Murphy, Robert O'Neill, Ann Marie Harding and the late Margie Kent.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Gene's Funeral on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at 9 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren St. Charlestown at 10 a.m. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. Visiting hours will be on Monday, July 30, 2012 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
