Obituary

David M. Tomlinson, 44, of Acushnet died Monday May 10, 2004 unexpectedly at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Rebekah A. (Thomas) Tomlinson.

Born in New Bedford, the son of Harry Tomlinson of New Bedford and the late Barbara L. (Cavanaugh) Tomlinson, he lived in New Bedford before moving to Acushnet 16 years ago.

Mr. Tomlinson was formerly employed as a sergeant for the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, where he worked from 1984 to 2004. He began his career at MCI-Walpole before being transferred to MCI-Plymouth. He was active in the Massachusetts Corrections Officers Federated Union, serving as Chief Steward from 1992 to 2004. He had previously worked at the New Bedford Municipal Airport.

Mr. Tomlinson formerly served on the Town of Acushnet Board of Public Works, and in 2002, he was elected as Selectman for the Town of Acushnet, and was currently serving as Chairman. He also served as a Constable from 1982 to the present. He had been a volunteer and former chief of New Bedford Rescue.

Survivors include his wife; his father; 2 daughters, Kelli Anne Tomlinson and Kaitlyn A. Tomlinson, both of Acushnet; a sister, Karen L. Surprenant of Rochester; and 2 nieces, Kasey and Lindsey Surprenant.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford,Friday May 14, 2004 at 7:30 AM.Funeral Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church, Acushnet at 9 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Thursday May 13, 2004 from 4-8 PM. Burial will be in Acushnet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Acushnet Animal Gift Fund, c/o Collectors Office, Acushnet Town Hall, 122 Main St., Acushnet, MA 02743.
