Worcester

Walter D. “Sonny” Knox Sr. 77, of 4 Garland St. died Monday, May 10, at home after an illness.

He was a loving husband for 48 years to Margaret M. (Shea) Knox who died in 2002. He was a loving father of three sons, Walter D. Knox Jr. of Worcester, Paul D. Knox of Columbus, OH and Kevin P. Knox of Spencer; a daughter, Joann M. Tuson of Worcester; a foster daughter, Patricia Coleman of North Carolina; two brothers, Robert R. Knox of Oxford and Herbert L. Knox of Worcester; four sisters, Elma E. Morrow of Oxford, Helena M. Blake of Rochdale, Lois E. Richardson of Worcester and Judith I. Mikat of Cherry Valley; and he was a loving Papa to five grandchildren and nieces and nephews. A brother, Charles F. Knox and a sister, Norma A. Pong, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Horace and Anna (Starbard) Knox and graduated from Worcester Boys Trade High School. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII serving in the Pacific and South Pacific Theatre aboard the U.S.S. LSM-13 as a gunners mate and was also present in Tokyo Bay at the signing of the Japanese Surrender on Sept. 2, 1945.

Mr. Knox worked in the construction department of New England Power Service for 40 years retiring in 1992. He also worked at the former Gilrain’s Steak House in the 50’s and 60’s

He was a member of the Main South American Legion Post #341, the LSM Association, the IBEW Local #486 and was an avid cribbage player.

The Funeral will be held Friday, May 14, from FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 9 Hammond St. with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Andrew the Apostle Church, 5 Spaulding St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling Hours are Thursday, May 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew the Apostle Church, 5 Spaulding St. Worcester 01603.
