Obituary

Antonio "Tony" Rizzotto, 98, of Hingham, MA, died on July 3, 2012. Tony's life was marked by devotion to his two great loves, Emma and Dottie, as well as his heartfelt dedication to family, dancing and racing his homing pigeons. Born in Boston in April 1914, Tony moved to Hingham as a young child and stayed for more than nine decades. He took an active interest in the life and citizens of the town, and was known as a regular presence at town hall meetings into his 90s. A graduate of Hingham High School, Tony studied for several years at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and also at the now Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology. During the 1930s to early 1950s, he was a supervisor at Bethlehem Steel's Quincy Fore River and Hingham shipyards. He spent the next 30-plus years working for the Hingham Public Schools, retiring as the system-wide supervisor of maintenance and buildings. Beginning as a teenager, he was a Hingham firefighter, achieving the rank of captain. Tony began racing homing pigeons as a boy, and he remained active with the sport into his 90s. He had a life-long passion and talent for dance -- square, round, ballroom -- attending dances five nights each week for decades. An accomplished gardener, Tony was also a gifted carpenter, home builder and woodworker. He was a Master Mason for more than 68 years. Tony is predeceased by his wives, Emma ("Gracious Love") and Dorothy, and survived by dear friends and the family he cherished, including: children Edward; Richard and wife Lynn; David and wife Christine; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother Robert and wife Peggy. Also predeceasing Tony were six other brothers and sisters. Interment was private. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend a memorial with reception to follow at St. John the Evangelist Church, 172 Main Street, Hingham, MA on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated in Tony's honor to The Rizzotto Scholarship, c/o Treasurer-Collector's Office, Town of Hingham, 210 Central Street, Hingham, MA 02043.
