George Fernandes, 72, of Dartmouth passed away peacefully at Our Lady's Haven after a long illness.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Ben and Ernestine (Amaral) Araujo.
George was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. He loved going to parades and attending the Portuguese Feast. He also enjoyed spending time with his cousins.
He was a member of the Washington Club, the Coalition for Community Living, and the Howland-Hanley Bowling League.
Survivors include an uncle, Manuel Amaral of Connecticut; two aunts, Dorothy Amaral of Florida and Mary Amaral of New Bedford; his special friend and caretaker for 18 years, Matt Frias from C.H.M.S.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was brother of the late James Fernandes, Francis Fernandes and Delores Souza, the grandson of the late Francisco and Deolinda Amaral, and nephew of the late Manuel C. Canastra, Maria (Amaral) Canastra, John Amaral and Luiz Amaral.
His Funeral Service will be held on Monday at 11:30 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St, New Bedford. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visitation will be 10:30 - 11:30 AM on Monday, prior to the Service. For directions and guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
