BEVERLY: Kathy Tormey, 57, died Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at the Brigham & Womens’s Hospital surrounded by family and friends, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was the beloved wife of David L. Tormey with whom she shared thirty-one years of marriage.
Born in Beverly on September 19, 1954, she was the daughter of the late Robert W. Cross and Joan Cross Scotti and stepdaughter to Edmund L. Scotti. A lifelong resident of Beverly, Kathy was a graduate of Beverly High School class of 1972. She was also a graduate of the University of Massachusetts and Salem State College, where she received her nursing degree.
She began her career at the J.B. Thomas Hospital in Peabody and worked there until its closing. Over the past 20+ years, Kathy has worked at Beverly Hospital, dedicating herself caring for others in the recovery room (PACU). Kathy was an outstanding compassionate nurse and an advocate for her patients.
Kathy loved traveling with her family, especially to Disney and their home in North Conway, New Hampshire, where she enjoyed skiing and shopping. She was an avid gardener, sports fan (Red Sox & Patriots) and she adored her Golden Retrievers. Kathy will be remembered for her positive and optimistic attitude, quiet strength, kindness, generosity, true love of living and her unparalleled devotion to family and friends. She will be sorely missed.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Matthew D. Tormey; one brother, Steven K. Cross of Beverly; two stepsisters, Norma “Bunny” (Scotti) Smith of Beverly and Francine (Scotti) McElvenny of Tampa, FL as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 253 Cabot St., Beverly at 9 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot Street, Beverly from 2 – 6 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Interment will be held in the Beverly Farms Cemetery.
