Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Bertha A. (Cloutier) Kennedy Smith, 75, of the Brightwood section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, July 5, 2012. She passed into Eternal Life surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving daughter, Germaine. She was born in Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada on June 16, 1937, a beloved daughter of the late Napoleon and Germaine (Rochon) Cloutier. She was raised in Canada and moved to Springfield around 1955. She was last employed at the Jewish Nursing Home in Longmeadow and retired in 1993. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in West Springfield. Bertha was the first woman Cub Scout Master of Troop 572 in West Springfield and a longtime board member of the New North Citizens Council in Springfield. For many years, Bertha was a well known seamstress in the Springfield area. During her leisure time, she enjoyed candlepin bowling and square dancing. She leaves her loving children, Bert L. Duchesne, Germaine M. Kennedy and her fiancé, Nelson Assarian and Charles G. Kennedy, all of Springfield; her two cherished grandchildren, Derek Duchesne and Justina Juzba; her dear sister, Claire Pinsonneault and her husband, AJ, of Coco, FL; her dear brother, William Cloutier and his wife, Rose, of Texas; and her many dear nephews and nieces. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers and sister, John Cloutier, Roland Cloutier and Lucille Cavros. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, July 10, 2012 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 9:30 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. Her burial will follow the Mass at Calvary Cemetery, 292 Hampden Street, Chicopee, MA 01013. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, July 9, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Her family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 370 7th Avenue, 3rd Floor, Room 320, New York, NY 10001.
