Obituary

Eugene M. Tangney, 80, of Worcester, died Monday, July 2nd in St. Vincent Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary T. (Salvatore) Tangney; four sons, Michael J. Tangney and his wife, Cindy of Seattle, WA, Stephen P. Tangney and his wife, Sandra of Apollo Beach, FL, Brian W. Tangney and his wife, Anne of Holden and John A. Tangney and his wife, Liza of Worcester; three sisters, Ann Darmody and her husband, Jeremiah, Catherine Stevens, and Eileen Valinski, and her husband, Peter Valinski, Sr. all of Worcester; six grandchildren, Jennifer Kibbe, Stephen, James, Grace, Brian, Jr. and Olivia Tangney. His sister, Marie Tangney predeceased him.

He was born in Worcester the son of Michael H. and Bridie (McCarthy) Tangney; and was a graduate of St. Peter’s High School. Mr. Tangney served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He had been a heavy equipment operator with I.U.O.E., Local 4 for over 60 years. Gene was a member of Christ the King Parish, the Knights of Columbus, VFW Post 288, American Legion Post 341; the Greendale Retired Men’s Club and had been a former member of the Worcester Lodge of Elks. Mr. Tangney was inducted into St. Peter’s High School Hall of Fame on November 4, 2000 in recognition of his football accomplishments while at St. Peter’s. His greatest love was his family; enjoying time spent with them especially his grandchildren.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Samaha and Yen Do Araquel, R.N of the Hematology and Oncology Department and to the nurses of the Infusion Unit for the wonderful care, and support provided to us during this most difficult time.

His funeral is Friday, July 6th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant Street. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, July 5th from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 9 Erie Drive, Suite 101, Natick, MA 01760.
