Obituary

Paul J. Ferus, 59, of New Bedford, passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2012 with family at his side after a well-fought battle with cancer. Paul is survived by his wife of 34 years, Nancy M. (Metro) Ferus, and his son, James P. Ferus, S.J.
Born in Fall River to the late Edward and Stella (Klus) Ferus, Paul attended St. Stanislaus School and graduated from Durfee H.S. in 1970. He went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from Southeastern Massachusetts University.
Paul worked for over 30 years for the Mass. Division of Employment and Training until his recent retirement.
Faithful and generous as a husband and father, Paul enjoyed scenic drives, family traditions, sports, puzzles and board games, serenading on the harmonica and listening to classical music – in particular the many concerts he attended as the devoted dad of a violinist son.
His surviving family also includes a brother, Thomas Ferus, and his companion Diane Charvat, of Westfield; a sister, Theresa St. Laurent, and her husband David, of Tiverton; a brother-in-law, Alan Metro, and his wife Carol, of Acushnet; and several nieces, nephews, and godchildren. He was the cherished son-in-law of the late Irene and Joseph Metro.
Described as a gentle soul, Paul found his spiritual home for the last three decades at St. Lawrence, Martyr Church in New Bedford. He was blessed to witness his son profess religious vows in the Society of Jesus last summer.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford Saturday, June 30th at 9 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 10 AM. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours Friday from 5-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Lawrence Church or to the New England Province of the Society of Jesus will be greatly appreciated.
