Obituary

SALEM - John Addison Lowell, 82, of Salem, died Thursday, June 21, 2012 at the Peabody Glen Health Care Center, Peabody, following a long illness.

Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Addison H. and Madeline (Bagley) Lowell. While living in Salem, he graduated from Salem High School. He then moved away from Salem and returned just over two years ago.

He attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY and received a bachelors degree in chemistry from the University of Leeds in England.

During the Korean Conflict, John served in the US Navy as a dental technician.

He was employed for most of his life as a research chemist in the leather industry and held three patents under his name. Companies he worked for included Stahl USA in Peabody and Union Specialties in Newburyport, from which he retired at the age of 74.

John is survived by one sister, Emilienne “Mimi” and her husband Parker Hastings of Weston, one nephew, Michael Hastings of Bellevue, WA, two nieces, Lesley Taisey of N. Yarmouth, ME, Ann McCauley of Wellesley and close friends Mark Gardner of Salem and Eugene Mitchell of Boston.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at 1 pm at the family lot in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Arrangements are by the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem.
