Obituary

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Horatio "Bruce" Hathaway Brewster, 61, of Sarasota, formerly of South Dartmouth, Mass., died Wednesday, April 28, 2004. He was the husband of Eleanor "Ellie" (Lamson) Brewster.

Born in New Bedford, Mass., he was the son of the late Horatio Hathaway and Annette (Hollis) Brewster. He was a graduate of Dartmouth High School.

Mr. Brewster served in the Army.

A resident of South Dartmouth, he was a former member of Grace Episcopal Church in New Bedford and St. Peter's Episcopal Church in South Dartmouth.

Mr. Brewster was a member of the Cuttyhunk Historical Association, the New Bedford Yacht Club and Dartmouth Fire District #1.

Sixteen years ago he moved to Sarasota, where he became a member of the Church of the Redeemer.

He had served as dockmaster of the Sarasota Yacht Club and became well known on the southwest coast of Florida for his marine knowledge.

His quick wit will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his widow; two daughters, Anne Murray and her husband, Andrew, and Karen Riendeau and her husband, Daniel, all of Sarasota; a sister, Marion (Brewster) Rockwood of Brookline, Mass.; a brother, James Hollis Brewster of Santee, Calif.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday May 6, 2004 in Grace Episcopal Church, 422 County St., New Bedford, followed by burial in South Dartmouth Cemetery, South Dartmouth. Calling hours are Wednesday from 4-7 p.m.
