James P. Hughes, 67

Dateline: Mansfield, MA

James P. Hughes, 67, of Mansfield, formerly of Foxboro and Norwood, passed away peacefully in the presence of his loving family, on Sunday, June 17, 2012 at Norwood Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Mary “Maureen” (Flaherty) Hughes to whom he was wed on May 23, 1980.
Born in South Boston, MA on April 28, 1945, he was a son of the late James H. and Anne (Mullen) Hughes.
Jim grew up in Roslindale, was educated in Boston schools and was a graduate of Boston Trade School. He served for five years as a member of the U.S. National Guard.
Prior to retiring, Mr. Hughes had worked for nine years as a construction foreman at Boston University. He had made his home in Mansfield for the past 13 years and had formerly resided in Foxboro for over 15 years and previously in Norwood.
A communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield, he was a former parishioner of St. Catherine’s Church in Norwood. He loved the ocean and spending time with his adoring family, especially with his grandchildren and best friend “Hughey”
Jim was very proud of his Irish heritage. He was a member of the Sons of Erin in Yarmouth and enjoyed listening to Irish music and Saturday nights spent dancing at Concannon’s Village in Norwood and at the Cape Cod Irish Village in South Yarmouth. Mr. Hughes was also an avid traveler and had visited Ireland on more than several occasions.
In addition to his beloved wife of 32 years, he is survived by his devoted children: Timothy D. Thayer of Norwood and Deborah A. Trask and her husband Kevin of Mansfield. The dear brother of Virginia Coughlin and her husband Frank of Florida, Gerald Hughes and his wife Elizabeth of New Hampshire and Roger Hughes of North Attleboro, he is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Christopher Trask, Lauren Trask and Kayla Trask all of Mansfield, as well as many nieces and nephews.
His Funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Thursday, June 21st at 9:30 A.M. from the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield followed by a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at 10:30 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt St. (Route 106) Mansfield. Private burial will be at a later date in Highland Cemetery, Norwood.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, June 20th from 4-8 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, Jim’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the American Diabetes Association, 146 Clifford St., Providence, Rhode Island 02903.
