Obituary

FALL RIVER…George A. Wrobel, 92, of Fall River died Thursday, June 14, 2012 at the Catholic Memorial Home in the presence of his loving family.
He was the husband of Wanda M. (Wojtowicz) Wrobel. Born in Fall River, the son of the late Luke and Jennie (Menczywor) Wrobel and a lifelong resident of this city.
Survivors include his widow; daughter Nancy A. Sousa and husband Tony of Fall River; two sons: George L. Wrobel and wife Kathryn and Thomas M. Wrobel and his wife Cecilia both of Fall River; sister Mary Garlick of Fall River; two grandchildren: Luke A. Wrobel and Jennie Chekares; four great grandchildren: Zachary Wrobel, Sophie Chekares, Isabelle Chekares and Andrew Chekares; niece and godchild Mary Ellen Frias and niece Carolyn Garlick. He was godfather to Jayne Marx. Mr. Wrobel was also grandfather of the late Michael D. Wrobel.
As a young man, he served as an acolyte under pastor, Fr. Hugo Dylla at St. Stanislaus Church and was a first baseman for the parish CYO baseball team. Mr. Wrobel, a graduate of Diman Vocational High School, also played baseball for the Fall River Chew Red Sox. "Legs" Wrobel was drafted by the Boston Braves before entering the Army. As a Staff Sergeant, he served in the Army Corps of Engineers with General George S. Patton's Third Army in the Rhineland and in the Ardennes Forest. In the final days of the war he was stationed in the Philippines as a member of the Asiatic Pacific invasion force.
He was a daily communicant at St. Stanislaus Church and also served as co-chairman of the Parish Festival.
An upholsterer, for over 65 years, he was the owner and operator of Wrobel Upholstery & Gift Shop. He repaired furniture on a part-time basis for both Mason Furniture and Cabot House Furniture, and in the late fifties and early sixties, he was the owner of Park View Dairy where he sold his unique brand of homemade ice cream.
Mr. Wrobel enjoyed racing pigeons as a member of the Avon Pigeon Club in Fall River and, along with his father, won the coveted 500-Mile New England Pigeon race. He maintained the Park View Loft for 50 years.
Funeral, to which relatives and friends are invited, will be held Monday at 9am from the BOYKO MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME (www.boykomemorial.com) at 709 Broadway in Fall River, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am at St. Stanislaus Church, Rockland Street, Fall River.
