GLOUCESTER: Albin S. “Al” Olson, 80, of Cunningham Road, died early Saturday morning, June 9, 2012 in the Golden Living Center following an extended illness. He was the husband of Nancy M. (McCallum) Olson.
Born in Gloucester on September 16, 1931, he was the son of the late Arthur W. Shaw and E. Blanche (Somers) Shaw.
A longtime member of the Cape Ann Sportsman’s Club, he won numerous awards for silhouette shooting. He was also an avid motorcyclist, and loved telling stories of his adventures on his Harley-Davidson. He was an enthusiastic story-teller, and those who knew him will always remember his dramatic ability to turn just about any experience into a memorable story.
Al was employed in sales for many years at Tadco Mfg. Co., Inc., owned by the Somers family. He also worked for the former Boley’s of Gloucester and later as a bus driver for CATA. In the late 1990s he worked for Sunrise Transportation, Inc., driving special needs children, and he also drove tour buses for Cape Ann Tours, where his sense of humor, storytelling ability and love of history entertained and informed those he met.
In addition to his wife of thirty-six years, he is survived by a son, Alex Robert Olson; two stepdaughters, Heidi Reardon, companion of Stan Campbell of Kittery, ME, and Amanda Orfanos of Gloucester; two grandchildren, Madison Turner and Gryphon Orfanos of Gloucester, and several children whom he considered to be grandchildren: Alicia Moore, Justin Moore, Jesse Moore and Corey Moore, all of Gloucester; two sisters, Marilyn Shaw Paul, wife of Douglass Paul of Henniker, NH, and Barbara Coy of Rotonda, Florida; a brother-in-law, William McCallum, Jr., husband of Elizabeth McCallum of Athol, MA, a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Corliss, wife of Warren Corliss of Front Royal, VA. He also leaves behind his longtime friends, Arnie Ellis, Mary and Mac McIntyre and several nephews: Thorne Tasker, Geoffrey Sheehy; Jaxon Sheehy, Rick Corliss, Nathan Corliss and Caleb Corliss.
In keeping with his wishes, services will be held privately by the family. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to St. Ann School, 60 Prospect St., Gloucester, MA 01930.
