Charles R. "Charlie" Upton, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, passed into eternal life on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at Winchester Hospital in Winchester following an extended illness. He was 71 years old.
Charlie was born in Boston on December 25, 1940, one of 10 children of the late Joseph A. Upton and Emily (Herring) Upton. Charlie grew up in Charlestown where he attended the Boston Public School system. He enlisted into the United States Army on November 19, 1963 and served his country proudly and honorably during the Vietnam Conflict. He was discharged on November 18, 1965 with the rank of Private First Class. Charlie began his career as a barber over 55 years ago and was owner of Charles Robert Haircutter in Somerville for over 40 years and then moved his business to Thompson Square in Charlestown as Charles Robert Haircutter II for the last 15 years.
Charlie is the devoted and loving brother of Melvin Upton and his wife Sissy of Charlestown, Emily Lorino and her husband Anthony of Stoneham, Maureen Doherty of Hampton, New Hampshire, Herbert Upton and his wife Carol of Malden, Blanche Pappas-Demling of Bridgeton, Maine, John Upton and his wife Virginia of Derry, New Hampshire, Ruth Capraro and her husband Richard of Medford and the late Joseph J. Upton and Margaret Fitzpatrick. He is also the loving uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Charlie's Funeral on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 9 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St., Charlestown, followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren St., Charlestown, at 10 a.m. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. Visiting hours will be on Friday, June 15, 2012 from 3 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
