Obituary

SPRINGFIELD - Catherine R. "Kay" (Guidetti) Gatti, 88, a longtime resident of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Sunday, June 10, 2012. She passed into Eternal Life from Heritage Hall East in Agawam after a long struggle with congestive heart failure, surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was born in Springfield on December 1, 1923, a beloved daughter of the late Natale and Bruna (Artioli) Guidetti. She was raised in Springfield, graduated from the High School of Commerce and was a lifelong resident of the city. In support of the war effort during World War II, she was an inspector at the former Springfield Armory. She was a devoted mother who raised four daughters and later returned to work at the former W.F. Young Company (Absorbine Jr.), in Springfield before retiring in 1989. During her leisure time, Kay was an avid reader and she especially loved mystery novels. She also enjoyed cooking, gardening and was a lover of animals. Kay had a penchant for movies and music of the forties. During her later years, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a quiet woman who adored her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. She was a communicant of Mary, Mother of Hope Church in East Springfield and a longtime communicant at the former Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her dear brother, Trento V. Guidetti who was Called Home in August of 1989 and her beloved husband and best friend, James J. “Jay” Gatti, who was Called Home on October 25, 2004. They were married at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Springfield on June 30, 1945 and were blessed with 59 years of happiness together. She leaves: her four loving daughters, Joanne M. Kendall of West Chester, PA, Kathleen A. “Kathy” Nelson and her husband, David, of Englewood, FL, Christine R. Gatti and her husband, David Wenzel, of Ashland, MA, and MaryAnn Gatti of Springfield; her five cherished grandchildren, Jennifer Kendall, Bryan Kendall and his wife, Kimberly, Christopher Mahoney and his fiancee, Jenifer Piegaro, Shaylyn Gatti, and Sage Gatti; and her four cherished great-grandchildren, Madeleine Catherine O’Keefe, Connor Kendall, and twins, Alexander and Taylor Kendall. Her funeral will be held on Friday morning, June 15, 2012, beginning at the St. Pierre - Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Name Church, 323 Dickinson Street, Springfield, MA 01108. Her Committal Service will follow the Mass at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, June 14, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
