Margaret M. Hyde, best known as “Peggy,” 93, a longtime Greenville resident, passed away in Tampa, Florida, on June 9, 2012. She was the widow of the late George Hyde, Sr.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late Douglas M. and Margaret Mary McGuinness) Monahan. The family emigrated to the Boston area in 1925 and to Providence a few years later, where Peggy attended Blessed Sacrament School and graduated from St. Patrick’s High School
Peggy met the love of her life, George, a Providence native, at a St. Patrick’s Day dance, and they married at Blessed Sacrament Church in 1945, and settled in Providence following George’s service in the U.S. Army, relocating to Greenville in 1957.
Like most of her immediate family, Peggy worked for a time at the U.S. Rubber Company plant in Providence. She was later employed at Bulova plants in the Providence area, and at various jewelry manufacturing companies in Olneyville. She retired after a number of years of service at the A.T. Cross Company in Lincoln.
A devout Catholic throughout her life, she was a daily communicant at St. Philip’s Church in Greenville following her retirement and preceding her move to Tampa to be closer to her son, beloved daughter-in-law, Kathy (the former Kathleen Fusco of Johnston), and grandson.
She will be remembered as a fun-loving, tender, caring person, with a love of music and an endless capacity for brightening the spirits of people around her.
She is survived by her son, George, Jr., and his wife Kathy of Lutz, Florida; grandson Douglas, of Chapel Hill, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews, including Patty Cuddigan of Sebastian, FL, Barbara Kirby of Scituate, Deborah Barclay of Honolulu, Hawaii, Charles Monahan of Smithfield, and John Monahan of Connecticut.
