Obituary

WEST SPRINGFIELD - William C. "Billy" Harbey, 82, of West Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, June 5, 2012. He passed into Eternal Life from his home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 24, 1929, a beloved son of the late Charles and Evelyn (Suse) Harbey. He was raised in Pittsburgh and at the age of 15, moved with his parents to Springfield where he lived until moving to the Feeding Hills section of Agawam in 1958. He lived there until moving to West Springfield in 1987. During his younger years, he was employed as an Iron Worker for Local 357 in Springfield and later was a vice-president of the National Steel Company in Newington, Connecticut. He was the owner of the Agawam Specialty Company and had last worked as a construction project manager for the October Company in Easthampton. During his leisure time, he enjoyed boating and was often seen on his boat with his family and his many friends. He was a quiet man who adored his family and showered them with his love and affection which was returned to him a thousand fold. He was a communicant of Saint Anthony Maronite Catholic Church. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by: his cherished granddaughter, Christina Harbey, who was Called Home on January 19, 1995; his dear sister, Arlene Harbey; and his dear brothers, Joseph Harbey and Charles Harbey. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Elmyra A. "Emmy" (Sadak) Harbey. They were married on May 2, 1954 at Saint Anthony Maronite Catholic Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 57 years of happiness together. He also leaves: his five loving children, William J. Harbey and his wife, Janet, and Diane J. Sapelli and her husband, John, all of West Springfield, Jeffrey E. Harbey and his wife, Kathy, of the Feeding Hills section of Agawam, Joseph L. Harbey of West Springfield, and Evelyn M. Pelley and her husband, Jay, of Southwick; his 11 cherished grandchildren, David, Nicole, Ariana and Charles Harbey, Krista, John and Kara Sapelli, Paige and Lexi Harbey, and Alyah and Joseph Harbey; his cherished great granddaughter, Emerson Harbey; his dear sisters-in-law, Mary Harbey of Westfield and Carmella Harbey of Springfield; his dear sisters-in-law of the Sadak family, Elizabeth Alevras, Susie Cotton and Ann "Nunie" Malkoon, all of West Springfield; his dear brother-in-law of the Sadak family, Joseph Sadak, of West Springfield; and his many dear nephews and nieces. His funeral will be held on Saturday morning, June 9, 2012, beginning at the St. Pierre - Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Saint Anthony Maronite Catholic Church, 375 Island Pond Road, Springfield, MA 01118. His burial will follow the Mass at Saint Thomas Cemetery, Kings Highway, West Springfield, MA 01089. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, June 8, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Saint Anthony Maronite Catholic Church Renovation Fund, 375 Island Pond Road, Springfield, MA 01118.
