Obituary

Richard E. “Dick” Korenkiewicz, 78, of Whitehall Pond, Mystic, died Sunday morning at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital after being stricken at his home. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Moran Korenkiewicz.

Dick was born in Norwich on May 29, 1925, the son of Alexander and Rosalie (Jarosz) Korenkiewicz. He served in the U.S. Navy and later graduated from Providence College.

Dick enjoyed a long distinguished career as an educator in the Norwich School system for 39 years, retiring in 1990.

A longtime former resident of Norwich, Dick was active in City League Baseball and also donated a great deal of his time at the local tennis courts. He enjoyed driving with his dogs and was an avid Red Sox fan. He will be fondly remembered as a loving husband and proud father.

In addition to his wife, Dick is survived by a son, Richard Korenkiewicz and his wife Courtney, of Indio, CA; several nieces and nephews as well as brothers-and sisters-in law. He was predeceased by a brother Henry, and sisters Ann Wierzbinski, Lucy Sullivan and Helen Leput.

His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic, on Thursday from 10-10:45am. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11am at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point, Rd., Groton.

Burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Old Mystic.
