WILLIAM P. ELWELL, JR. age 68, a Hingham resident since 1966, died on Monday,April 26th at his home after a long illness. Born in Boston, Mr. Elwell spent his early life in Wellesley. He attended the River School in Weston, was a 1955 graduate of the Belmont Hill School in Belmont, and a 1959 graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, CT.From 1959-1963, he served with the United States Navy in the operations department of a guided missile cruiser and as aid to the shipyard commander in Portsmouth, VA. Following his navy service he went with the New England Mutual Life Insurance Co as an insurance salesman and financial planner, retiring in August of 2003.He is an active member of the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Hingham, the Cohasset Golf Club and is Trustee Emeritus of The Carroll School in Lincoln. He was a past member of the Hingham Yacht Club and the Country Club of Brookline.He leaves his wife, Anne (Johnston) Elwell of Hingham; two daughters, Sarah E. Markert of New Canaan, CT and Nancy E. Michalowski of Cohasset; and his two sons, David H. Elwell of Charlestown and the late Timothy Keating Elwell. He was the brother of Susan Newbury of Weston, MA and Nancy Gaylord Powers of Akron, Ohio.Also survived by 7 grandchildren; Zachary, Abigail, Nathaniel and Rebecca Markert, and Anna, Charley and Margaret Michalowski.A Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, May 1st at 3 PM at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main St., Hingham.Visiting hours and flowers omitted by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to The Carroll School, 25 Baker Bridge Rd., Lincoln, MA 01773 or to The Belmont Hill School, 350 Prospect St., Belmont, MA 02178.The interment is to be private.
