Obituary

Normand E. Girard, of Winchester, passed away May 20, 2012. He was the loving, caring husband of 54 years to Nancysue (Carroll) Girard. Born in Hartford, CT, Norm was a graduate of Meriden High School and the College of Pharmacy at the University of Connecticut at Storrs. He continued his education at Yale University School of Public Health, graduating in 1957 with a Master's Degree in Hospital Administration. An Air Force Veteran, Mr. Girard spent the majority of his professional career as the President of Somerville Hospital (1966-1991). In that capacity, he was elected to Fellowships in the Royal Society of Health and the American College of Hospital Administrators. He was President of the Hospital Superintendents Club in 1979, a State Delegate of the American Hospital Association (1986-1988), and served as Chairman of the Board of the Massachusetts Hospital Association. Mr. Girard was also a member of the Somerville Kiwanis Club. In his spare time, Norm, known for his sense of humor and compassion, enjoyed spending treasured times with his grandchildren. A multi-faceted, unselfish man, his leisure activities included racing sailboats competitively as well as leisure sailing and building model ships. Time was also divided between golfing, gardening, kitchen cooking creations and a constant thirst for knowledge. He was a master of crossword puzzles.

Norm was the wonderful father to Jim Girard and his wife Ulla of Germany, Tom Girard and his wife Judy of Tivoli, NY, Susie Condon and her husband Brian, of Hampstead, NH and Dr. Katie Fortin and her husband Patrick of Winchester, MA, and is further survived by his cherished grandchildren: Kristen and Danielle Girard, Sarah and Emily Condon, Patrick, Molly, Maggie and Brian Fortin. A Memorial Mass will be held on Thurs., May 31 at 11AM in St. Mary’s Church, 155 Washington St., Winchester. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Off-street parking is available at Costello Funeral Home 177 Washington St., Winchester (4 doors from the church, same side of street). Interment is private. At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, donations in Norm’s memory may be made to the Winchester Hospital Center for Cancer Care-payable to the Winchester Hospital Foundation 611 Main St. Winchester, MA 01890.
