Obituary

Manuel Nunes, 92, of Dartmouth died Monday May 14, 2012 at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mary Cecelia (Newby) Nunes.
Born on June 12, 1919 in Dartmouth, he was the son of the late Manuel A. and Frances (Mendes) Nunes.
Mr. Nunes was formerly employed by Berkshire-Hathaway until his retirement. He later worked for the Ahavath Achim Synagogue.
He was a communicant of St. Julie Billiart Church. He was in the first class of Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist and served for 25 years. In 1984, he was awarded the Marian Medal from the Diocese of Fall River for his service to his Church. On his 90th birthday, he received the Papal Blessing from Pope Benedict XVI.
A longtime member of Clube Madeirense S.S. Sacramento, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the organization in 2005. He was a 2012 Feistero for the Feast of Blessed Sacrament.
During World War II, he served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army with the Medical Corps and the Military Police.
He is survived by his children, Mary Louise Nunes and her husband Randall Mello, John L. Nunes and his wife Yvette (Gauthier) Nunes, all of Dartmouth, Paul M. Nunes and his wife Karen (Rose) Nunes of Swansea, and Eileen A. Clark and her husband John of East Granby, CT; his grandchildren, Christopher M. Nunes and his wife Lorianne, Andrew Nunes and his wife Jennifer, Daniel Nunes, Jeremy Nunes, and Jennifer Clark; his great-grandchildren, Austin Nunes, Jake Nunes, Karissa Nowicki, and Candice Nowicki; and his sister, Frances Ferro. He also leaves several nieces and nephews, who fondly called him "Uncle Pete", and many cousins in Madeira, Brazil and throughout the United States.
He was the brother of the late Maria (Nunes) Fernandes, Joseph Nunes, Adelaide Nunes, and Antone Nunes.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 9 AM at St. Julie Billiart Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 3-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
