Obituary

WHITMAN, C. William “Bill” of Wellesley Hills and East Dennis, beloved husband for 44 years of Sally Morton (nee Stollmaier), devoted father of Anne Elizabeth Whitman of Old Greenwich, CT, and Kimberly Whitman McGovern of Summit, NJ, caring father-in law of Patrick McGovern, cherished GP to William, Anne Grace and Charles, and loving brother to Mary Ives of Lake Forest, IL, passed away in the presence and loving embrace of Sally, Anne, Kimberly and Patrick on Monday, May 14.

Bill grew up in Downers Grove, IL. He graduated from Miami University class of 1967 and it is here that he met and fell in love with his devoted wife and soul mate. He served as a Private in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge in 1973. Bill was a Senior Vice President, Investments at Wells Fargo Advisors. He worked as a financial consultant for more than 35 years.

Bill was an extremely active participant in his children’s lives. Through his involvement he became a US National Swimming Official and was invited to the US Olympic Training Camp and to be an official at the Pan AM Games. He was a long time active member of the Wellesley Country Club, where he most recently served on the membership committee. He was also a long time usher and vestry member for Finance at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. He was an avid golfer, tennis and paddle player, boatsman and fisherman. Bill had a passion for sports, especially baseball, which he played in college. His knowledge of baseball sports trivia was unsurpassed! But Bill’s greatest gift was his love of people, always engaging them anyway he could. He also had a love of games and you could always count on the fact that he would have a few new ones at every gathering!

His passing leaves a void in our hearts, but his memory and his example will fill us and keep us moving forward. Felled by a devastating cancer that kills so many non smokers we ask that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bill's memory to MGH Lung Cancer Research Fund, 165 Cambridge Street, 6th Fl. Boston, MA 02114.

Family and friends are invited to gather for a visitation in the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St. (Rt.16) WELLESLEY, Sunday, May 20 from 4:30-8:30 PM. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 21 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 79 Denton Road, Wellesley at 11:00 AM. Following the funeral there will be a reception at the Wellesley Country Club to celebrate Bill's life! A private burial will take place on Cape Cod.
