Obituary

William W. Fitzgerald Sr. went home to be with the Lord on May 9, 2012 after a short illness at the age of 71. He was born in New London on June 16, 1940 the son of the late William and Madeline Fitzgerald of Mystic. He graduated from Stonington High School in 1958 and then joined the Air Force where he served for two years. After serving his country, he accepted a position with Electric Boat in Groton where he remained for 52 years in various jobs with the most current being as Project manager. Bill was still employed at Electric Boat at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, Judith Roseanne Sylvester Fitzgerald who he married on September 19, 1961. Bill and Judy moved to North Stonington in 1966. He is also survived by his children, William W. Fitzgerald Jr., Sheila M. Bond and her husband Gary, and a son, James A. Fitzgerald and his wife Alice; 6 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Bill was very involved with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with all of them and helping them in their activities. He was greatly loved by his entire family. He will also be missed by his faithful companion, his black lab “Ashlyn” who accompanied him to their favorite place Dairy Queen for ice cream.

Bill was very involved in the community affairs such as the North Stonington Agricultural Fair Assoc., charter member of the Knights of Columbus, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Friendly Sons of St. Patrick where he was currently serving as President, Life Member of the North Stonington Fire Dept., New London County Fire Chiefs Assoc., Life Member of North Stonington Ambulance Assoc., North Stonington Grange where he was honored as Grange Citizen of the Year in 1995, and was awarded the State of Connecticut Public Service Award for 25 years of dedicated service to the Town of North Stonington in 2001.

Bill’s family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Monday from 9:30am-11:30am. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas More Church, Rte. 201, North Stonington at 12noon. Burial with presentation of military honors will follow.
