Evans – Virginia Zachert, 92, entered into rest on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at her residence.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at 10:00 AM at Platts Belair Road Chapel.
Burial in Westview Cemetery in Cuthbert, Georgia will take place on Saturday, May 12, 2012.
Ms. Zachert was born in Jacksonville, Alabama March 1, 1920 to the Rev. R.E. & Cora Massee Zachert. Dr. Zachert spent her early life in Southwest Georgia. She is a graduate of Norman College 1937; BA Georgia State Women’s College (now Valdosta State Univ.) 1940; MA Emory Univ. 1947; PhD. Purdue Univ. 1949. She served in the US Navy as an Atmospheric Scientist during WWII. After receiving her doctorate in Psychology, she served in the USAF as an aviation psychologist from 1949 to 1954.
Following her military service, Dr. Zachert worked as a research psychologist in academia and private industry. She joined the staff of the Obstetrics & Gynecology Department at the Medical College of Georgia in 1963. Dr. Zachert remained with MCG until her retirement in 1984 as a professor emeritus.
In 1971, she was appointed to the Presidents Council for the Aging and served federal government & the Silver Haired Legislature in various capacities until 1996.
Virginia’s father was a Baptist preacher and she was a woman of faith throughout her life and supported congregations in their work locally and abroad. She endowed a chair of Greek Letters to the Baptist Seminary of Prague in the Czech Republic in memory of her parents.
She is preceded in death by her siblings Edward Zachert, Adeline Barber and Lucia Ladson. She is survived by her dear friend Joyce Kephart, her sister-in-law Martha Jane Zachert and 9 nieces/nephews, 22 great nieces/nephews and 12 great great nieces/nephews. For many decades, Virginia was the much loved matriarch of the Zachert family.
The family will receive friends at the home at 4275 Owens Road, Cottage 528 on Friday, May 4, 2012 from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.
