Obituary

CHICOPEE – George W. Landry, Sr., 76, of the Chicopee Falls section of Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Friday, April 27, 2012. He passed into Eternal Life from his home surrounded by his loving family, his cherished cat, Angel and his wonderful caregivers from Mercy Hospice. He was born in Waltham, Massachusetts on November 25, 1935, a beloved son of the late Alexander and Winifred M. (Boudreau) Landry. At a young age, his parents moved to Newton, Massachusetts where he lived for many years. He later moved to Granby, Massachusetts where he lived for many years before moving to Brimfield. He wintered in Florida for many years and finally settled in Chicopee around 2002. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and traveled cross country for the military as a Teletype Interceptor. He attained the rank of Specialist Second Class and received the German Occupation Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Following his military service, he worked as a field engineer for Collins Radio. This took him to several states including Mississippi, Louisiana and Washington, DC where he served on board Air Force One during the Johnson Administration. He continued as a civil service employee in the communications field at various locations including; Richardson, Texas, and Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, Massachusetts. After his retirement from his civil service position, he was employed as a TV and Electronics Technician. He worked at Custom Electronics, Del Padre and Manny’s TV and Appliance. He also had his own business for over 30 years repairing TV’s and other electronics in addition to working for others. George was active in the Granby Athletic Association for many years as a baseball coach, basketball referee and team sponsor while his children were young. He actively supported bingo for many years on Friday’s at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Granby. George and Judy enjoyed traveling back to Nova Scotia, Canada, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton Island where his parents were from along with his many aunts, uncles and cousins. After retirement, they enjoyed traveling cross country as he was very active in many reunions with his Army Squadron. He enjoyed the years they spent wintering in Florida and particularly liked taking walks around Lake Eustis. He was an avid Ham Radio Operator and regularly spoke to other “Hams” around the world. One of his favorite things was his QSL card collecting, much like a stamp collector. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and a devoted American. He enjoyed puzzle making and was an avid reader of Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler which were two of his favorite authors. He was a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Judith A. “Judy” (Coulter) Landry. They were married on September 28, 1957 at Sacred Heart Church in Newton Centre, Massachusetts and were blessed with over 54 years of happiness together. He also leaves: his loving children, Michelle M. Hill and her husband, Richard of Arlington, TX, Jacqueline A. Landry and her husband, Hector Catala, of Guaynabo, PR, George W. Landry, Jr. of Stallings, NC, and Cheryl A. Arnold and her husband, David of Southampton; his six cherished grandchildren, Dean Dickie, Jeanette Dickie, William Catala and his wife, Carrie, Dr. Sara Catala-Landry and her husband, Jomar Camacho, Chase Landry and Georgia Landry; his dear sisters, Claire DeVan of Newton, MA, Mary Ellen Parker and her husband, Paul, of Framingham, Kay McCullough of Florida and Margaret Troy and her husband, Donald, of Framingham; his dear nephews and nieces; and his cherished grand cats who loved for him to visit and pet them; Socks, Mollie, Itsy, Brady and Big Poppy. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his dear brothers, John Landry, Dr. Hilton Landry, PhD, and Joseph Landry. His funeral will be held on Thursday morning, May 3, 2012 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:45 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Committal Service with Military Honors will follow the Mass at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to Mercy Hospice, 1236 Main Street, Suite 303, Holyoke, MA 01040.
