Obituary

Augusta, GA---John V. Godfrey, 85, died Monday, April 23, 2012 at University Hospital in Augusta.
He is survived by three daughters, Loraine Piro of Eatonton, Georgia, Janet Privitera of Marietta, Georgia, and Angela Lane of Stanley, North Carolina and four grandchildren Tate Hurlbut, Steven Piro, Jonathan Lane, and Rachel Lane. He is also survived by three sisters; Grace Brock, Opie Gunter, and Alta Renfroe and three brothers, Benny Godfrey, Irving Godfrey, and Gilbert Godfrey.
John was born on April 1, 1927 in Palatka, Florida to Harry and Ola Mae Godfrey. He was the third oldest of eleven children. He entered the U.S. Navy on February 19, 1945. He served as part of the U.S. occupation forces in Japan after World War II. He was discharged on June 19, 1946.
John and his family eventually settled in Augusta, Georgia after accepting a position with E. I. DuPont at the Savannah River Plant. While employed for DuPont he attended Augusta State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration. He retired from DuPont March 31st, 1989.
John loved the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending time at the lake. He enjoyed telling stories, eating good food with friends and family, and a good laugh. He also enjoyed traveling and learning about new cultures and customs. He made friends wherever he went. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Augusta and an active supporter of missions work. For the past year he had been residing at Elmcroft Assisted Living Facility in Martinez, Georgia where he had a new audience for his stories.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Platt’s Funeral Home Crawford Avenue.
There will be a memorial service at First Presbyterian Church in Augusta at 10:00 am on Friday, April 27, 2012 with Reverend John Franks officiating. He will be laid to rest at Westover Memorial Park.
The family asks that contributions be made to First Presbyterian Church (Missions Fund), 642 Telfair St., Augusta, GA 30901, in lieu of flowers.
