Obituary

DAVID J. ADAM, age 82, of Carver, formerly of Hingham, died on Monday, April 19th at the Mayflower Nursing Center in Plymouth after a long illness. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mr. Adam came to Northamptom, MA at an early age, where he was educated. He then enlisted in the United States Navy in January of 1941 and served aboard aircraft carriers in both the European and Pacific Theaters. He was honorably discharged in January of 1947 as a Chief Aerographer's Mate. After his navy service he enrolled in the school of engraving at the North Bennet Street Industrial School in Boston.He then served an apprenticeship with Lunt Silversmiths of Greenfield, MA. In 1967 he joined forces with Kenneth R. Westgard, a goldsmith, and established the Adam & Westgard Co of Boston, where they manufactured Masonic jewels for lodges in Massachusetts and elswhere. Mr. Adam and his family came to Hingham in 1960 and following his retirement in 1987, moved to Peacham, VT for 10 years before relocating to Carver. An active mason, he was a Past Master of Old Colony Masonic Lodge in Hingham and also served as District Deputy Grand Secretary of the Plymouth 17th Masonic District. During his years in Peacham, Vermont, he served on the town library board. He was also an accomplished oil painter and belonged to several art leagues in Massachusetts. He leaves his wife, Dorothy I. (O'Neil) Adam of Carver; a daughter, Margaret J. Jewell of St. Johnsbury, VT; two sons, David J. Adam of Wells River, VT and Stewart I. Adam of Plymouth; his brother, Russell Adam of West Newton; 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, April 24th at 11 AM at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main St., Hingham, MA 02043. Visiting hours and flowers omitted by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Church of St. John the Evangelist.
