Obituary

Vernon Walters, 83, of Augusta, entered his home in Heaven on the afternoon of April 23rd, 2012, with his family by his side.

Funeral services with full military honors will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with Rev. Roger Schwartz officiating. Interment to follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Vernon was born to Benjamin Franklin Walters and Eva Mae Walters of Bennettsville, SC on June 20th, 1928. A Korean War veteran, he proudly served in the U.S. Army for 23 years. He then worked as a Georgia state probation officer for 20 more years.

He endeared himself to the outdoors, as he loved to camp in the North Georgia mountains, where he spent much of his time after retirement. He enjoyed fishing, watching baseball, and loved pets as if they were his children, especially his beloved dog, Sassy. He had a smile that lit up the world around him, and he touched the lives of so many friends and family members.

Vernon is survived by his beautiful wife of 63 years, Irene Walters; his daughter Linda Lack (and husband Bobby); and his son Vernon D. Walters, Jr., all of Augusta. He also leaves behind four grandsons, Danny Lack, Kevin Lack, Michael Lack, and Brian Lack; two granddaughters, Natalie Walters and Valerie Walters; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers Paul Walters and Ben Walters, and sisters Janice Locklear and Mary Rudowski.

His family expresses warm gratitude to Dr. Michael Behnia, Dr. Robert Harmon, and the staff at Doctors Hospital and Alliance Hospice, for the comfort and care they provided during his final days.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the CSRA Humane Society, 425 Wood St., Augusta, GA, 30904.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening, April 25, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
